Music Program
Instructor: Ms. Kritzer, music@reedpta.com

It is an unfortunate reality that San Jose Unified School District no longer provides music instruction for its students.  Fortunately Reed PTA has been able to fund its own private music program with Ms. Kritzer, lovingly known by the children as "Ms. K".

Ms. Kritzer has years of experience in music, dance, and musical theater.  She has taught music and directed musical plays at Reed since 2004.

Every class receives music instruction once a week.  Ms. Kritzer uses the Silver Burdett Making Music curriculum, which was purchased with grant monies secured by Principal Thurston.

Ms. Kritzer also assists the teachers with the annual International Day song and dance program, along with preparing the children for twice yearly music performances.  Once a year, she directs a musical play as an after school enrichment activity.

It is only with your continued financial support through PTA membership dues, tax-deductible donations, and PTA fundraisers that we can continue and expand this very special and much loved program.

Art Vistas Unlimited
Chairpersons: Monika Ryser & Erin Nash,
artvistas@reedpta.com

We are very happy that Reed School volunteers will again bring the Art Vistas program to the classrooms this year.

Art Vistas is an art appreciation program. A parent volunteer (docent) will go into the classroom about six times a year. The docent brings a “mini-exhibit” of great works of art into the classroom and conducts an easy to understand discussion with the students. This is followed by a hands-on lesson that provides unique creative opportunities. The students will use a wide variety of art materials and learn about different techniques.

Towards the end of the school year, we will have an Art Show where every child will exhibit a masterpiece. If you have ever seen one of these Art Shows, you know what our Reed Artists are capable of!

We need your help! This program is solely run by volunteers. To make it possible, we need at least one parent per class to go into the classroom approximately once a month. You do not have to be art savvy or a teacher. The lessons are well laid out and we will provide training before you start. Look for the volunteer sign up sheet in your welcome package!

We also need your financial support! All the art supplies are provided and paid for by the PTA.  We need your generous donations to stock up on our paints, papers and other supplies.

Reflections
Chairperson:
Kindal Gallagher, reflections@reedpta.com

The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students. The Reflections Program provides opportunities for students to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for original works of art inspired by a pre-selected theme, while increasing community awareness on the importance of the arts in education.

The Reflections Program was established in 1969 by National PTA board member Mary Lou Anderson. Since that time, more than 10 million students have participated in the program. The program's longevity and participation figures attest to its strength. The excitement and enthusiasm that the program generates for children, parents, schools and communities is unmatched.

Participation and appreciation for the arts is the Reflections Program's goal. Although the Reflections Program follows a "contest" format, winning should not be the emphasis.

Participation in the Reflections Program is a great way for students to explore and learn about various art forms. Creating art is a valuable learning process that challenges students to use their critical thinking skills as well as their creative talents to create art that supports a specific theme.

Students may submit an entry in any of the six arts areas listed below. Only original works of art are accepted. Depending on local PTA guidelines, students may enter more than one work of art. The six arts areas are as follows:

bulletLiterature
bulletMusical composition
bulletPhotography
bulletVisual arts
bulletDance Choreography
bulletFilm/Video Production

Lego Robotics
2009 Season Photos & Video

Chairperson: Peter Ryser,
robotics@reedpta.com
Volunteers: Are the parents of the participating students & Pioneer High School robotic team members.

Reed Lego Robotics is part of the world wide program FIRST LEGO League (FLL).  FLL is an exciting and fun global robotics program that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science, and technology in kids.

Each year Robotic teams embark on an adventurous Challenge based on current, real-world issues. Guided by a team coach and assisted by mentors, the kids:

bulletResearch and solve a real-world problem based on the challenge theme
bulletPresent their research and solutions
bulletBuild an autonomous robot using engineering concepts
bulletCompete in a local tournament with a chance to continue to regional tournaments

Using the yearly Challenges:

bulletEntices kids to think like scientists and engineers
bulletProvides a fun, creative, hands-on learning experience
bulletTeaches kids to experiment and overcome obstacles
bulletBuilds self-esteem and confidence
bulletInspires kids to participate in science and technology
bulletEncourages team work and good sportsmanship

No matter what the child’s subject interest, robotics offers an opportunity for engagement. Whether it is by creativity, technology, or research, robotics dares kids to test, explore, expand, or completely change thoughts and approaches for different sciences each year.

The requirements for this program are quite simple:

bulletYour child is a Reed student in the 4th or 5th grade.
bulletYou are willing to assist the team parent with the mentoring of the students during team meetings and tournament.
bulletYou and your child are willing to commit to team practices (typically twice a week for approximately 2 hours).
bulletYou are willing to pay the team fee that will cover part of the registration and       team t-shirts.
bulletYour child is willing to challenge their minds and help their teammates in a positive and encouraging fashion.
bulletYour child is willing to have fun and learn!
